Change your life to save your life

Today I was listening to a conversation on the train between a couple and their friend.
The couple was telling her how their friend has cancer for the second time in a year and the friends question to them was " does he take care of himself, like does he eat healthy?" In unison the couple responded
"Well, he does now. He didn't before he got cancer the first time."

And it made me think...some people wait for something to happen to their health before making a lifestyle change.

Why is that?

If we started taking care of our bodies earlier in life, would it prevent issues later?
During one of my lectures yesterday, Walter Willett, an American physician and nutrition researcher, said
"Diet during childhood and adolescence is crucial. Cells in the body are more supple to diseases in young bodies. If proper care and nutrition is not provided to the body, there will be higher risk of health issues as an adult."

I was fortunate to grow up in a home where we were provided with healthy, well-balanced meals. Does this mean we didn't eat fast food, pizza or ice cream?

Absolutely not.

But we were taught to have vegetables with every meal.
That green veggies are cancer fighting and will protect our hearts.
Fruit is not only a healthy snack, but will prevent us from having to visit the doctor.

Moderation was instilled in our brains at a young age, and I think that is a big part of me not overindulging in "bad for you" foods now as an adult.

This does not mean we cannot take the steps to a healthier lifestyle as an adult.
Anything is possible, you just have to WANT to make the change towards a better life.

Who doesn't want to make the most of the time we have here?
Why are you waiting to create the best life for yourself?

  1. great post, very motivational. We all need a good kick in the pants sometimes!

  2. Great post. Funny how most people really do wait for a catalyst. I guess we need something to get us moving... or more importantly, get us sweating.

    1. great way to break a sweat is by running....or so I hear

  3. Awesome post- I don't understand people who don't take care of themselves! Nobody else can care for your body, heart, and lungs besides you!! :)

    1. you only get one body for your entire life...might as well treat it the best way possible!

  4. Great post girl! It is SO true and I couldn't have said it any better.

Oh and P.S. I nominated you for a blog award ;) Check it out. http://readytogetsweaty.wordpress.com/2012/06/05/one-lovely-blog-award/

  5. Great motivation to appreciate our health. I especially love the last pic about change. It's never too late to start.
