In Memoriam

 Judith Marie Shesh

11 years ago today my aunt Judi lost her battle with breast cancer.
She was a mother-wife-daughter-sister-cousin and friend, who touched the lives of every person she met.
I want to take the time out to not only honor her today, but to share her story with all of you.

1996: My aunt was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. After a long year of various treatments the cancer appeared to have subsided. As a result of facing her own cancer, she became active with several breast cancer organizations to comfort others, as well as help search for a cure. Sadly, her determination to comfort and help others ended when she lost her final battle with the disease on April 20,2001.

2001: The Annual Judi Shesh Memorial 5k was started to raise money and awareness for breast cancer, in her memory.
2002: The Judi Shesh Memorial Foundation was created and brought our event to unimaginable heights. We are now in our 12th year of operation, each year growing more than the last. Our 5ks draw over 1,000 participants and last year we were able to raise over $30,000!

Our foundation has been able to help many local families through the "Families in Need" benefaction. Women with breast cancer are able to fill out a simple application (with verification from their doctor) and we provide them with a check to use the money however they need, from childcare to doctor bills.
We also give a portion of our money to the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island, this facilaty has some of the most advanced and cutting edge cancer research in the country. Our money goes specifically to breast cancer research in hopes of finding a cure.

If you would like to help us, help others, you can do so by donating online by clicking here and "registering."

Please visit our facebook fanpage to stay in touch with our event for this year, and again thank you for letting me share this story with all of you.

  2. Amazing story. My mother passed away 2 weeks ago after a year long battle with breast cancer. I miss her terribly, but am SO happy there are people doing great things to fight this battle against it. Kudos to you and your family!

    1. Steph, I am so sorry for your loss. If there is anything you need please do not hesitate to reach out to me, I mean it. I am glad to hear that our efforts make you happy, every year we are one step closer to finding a cure :)

  3. I worked at the YMCA in Bayshore and was Judi's assistant teacher in Preschool. I think of her everyday. I have the work a couple of times and I will be walking again this year in honor of Judi, myself as well as all the women at the Wellness Center in Bayshore who are couragous and strong women, we come together to support eachother. We have never stopped praying for the Shesh family. Peace,
