Changing my approach to my health

Since finding out I have arthritis at the ripe old age of 28 and had my first of two knee surgeries my approach to my overall health has changed.

I already have a good grip on my workouts and although they have changed slightly to appease my current situation I am still working out 6 days a week. My eating could be better but I am happy with my food choices 85% of the time and change it up when I feel it nessecary.

The one thing I am not great at doing is taking daily supplements. As of now the only thing I take daily is my Hair, Skin and Nails. I have a prescription for Vitamin D but forget to take it all the time (bad Carlyn bad) and I don't even have a daily multivitamin! So when I was given the opportunity to partner up with Fiber Choice start taking their Fruity Bites I couldn't resist. 

At first I wasn't sure I needed to take a fiber supplement, but upon further research I found out that even the healthiest eaters don't always reach the daily recommended amount of fiber. It's important for everyone to have/take  fiber because it supports your digestive tract by keeping food and nutrients moving through your system, and by helping your body to properly balance the bacteria in your colon.

For those wondering how to get fiber just from your food, you can choose from: (According to the American Academy of Dietetics) fruits; vegetables; grains; whole grain products such as breads and cereals; beans, peas and other legumes; and nuts and seeds.

So the options are endless, if you eat any or all of those things ;)

I am looking forward to documenting my experience with taking fiber and seeing how it affect my body, if at all.

You Are Stronger Then You Think

Three weeks ago everything changed.
For those of you who have been following me for a long time know I have had on and off knee issues for the last 2 years. 

Three weeks ago after my usual work outs my left knee blew up and remained swollen for 4 days before I was able to get myself to my Orthopedic.

After my Orthopedic appointment everything kind of happened really quickly. I had an MRI two days later, follow up Othropedic appointment when I was told my meniscus needed surgery, the same surgery I was trying to avoid when this first happened two years ago.

I scheduled my surgery for June 26th and prepared myself for a short, but still too long for my active lifestyle recovery.  Two days before surgery I had my final pre-op appointment with my Orthopedic, as he was looking over my files one last time he noticed something looked off in my MRI. They said they wanted some X-Rays just to make sure they're seeing everything they needed before operating.

After the X-Ray I was brought into the office by the two doctors to discuss the results. It turns out my meniscus has never been the root of my knee pain or issues, instead it was arthritis in both of my knees along with luxating patellas. 

I was told that the surgery was still performed arthroscopically and that this was nothing I had done in the gym but something I was born with, but neither of those things were comforting.
The Dr. also told me that my recovery would be 8-12 weeks and I could no longer do any physical activities that were not swimming, walking or yoga.

 And that was when I lost it.
 I cried a lot that day.
Fast forward to surgery day.

The Dr. said I would be in major pain for the next week because they had to cut all of my tendons and nerves in my left knee to alleviate the pressure I was feeling due to my kneecap being so off track, as well as under the knee cap pain because they scraped the arthritis to clean it up and hopefully stop my bone on bone action I was currently dealing with. He also said I would need crutches for the next six weeks because I would be unable to walk and I'd be out of work for at least two of those six weeks because I would be unable to sit in an upright position.

Fun stuff, right?

However, he was wrong. Not about everything but some things.

Here I am two weeks post op and I am walking without crutches 90% of the time, and the only pain I am suffering from is after physical therapy because I am trying to strengthen the layers of tendons/tissue that was operated on.

In the last two weeks I've: Gone to the beach thanks to my family and crutches, went out to dinner twice, celebrated the 4th of July weekend party hopping and I made it to the gym three times.
All things I thought were impossible this soon after surgery due to what I was originally told.

The moral of the story is: 
You are stronger then you think.
Don't let one persons opinions, doctors or otherwise, depict your future.

My recovery may be slower then I'd like but I am still recovering and that's what matters.
 My PT also told me I'll be back to my old routine in as little as 4 weeks.
