Power X-Week 1 Summary

I did the unthinkable, and lived through Power X. That was by far the most instense, heartpounding, sweat pouring, challenging workout I have ever experienced in my life.

At this time last year I was in a cast and on crutches because I tore all of the ligaments in my left ankle and I was extremely out of shape. I had not done a real physical workout since junior year of high school (2003) No I am not joking. SoI spent 3/4 of my summer this way and wasn't able to start working out until September. If you asked me two years ago what I considered a good workout I probably would have said walking around the mall or target.

I never had the ambition to push myself, never had to drive to work at something.

Now all I do is look for the next challenge.  My first challenge was to  survive kickboxing... accomplished that by Nov 2010. Then it was Jump & Drill started in January 2011, and  now I can't imagine not having it as part of my workout, I LOVE that class. Then I wanted to be able to take Jump & Drill AND Interval Training after (that's a 2.5 hr grueling workout) I believe I accomplished this end of March '11 or early April... Now my challenge was Power X

I had nightmares for three days before the class(not kidding), my anxiety on the train ride home Wednesday was through the roof. I was regretting my decision before I even made it to the track.

6:45pm Wednesday July 20. It starts.

Like I mentioned in my previous post this class consists of 3 stations:: ViPR, Battling Ropes & TRX. You do each of those stations twice.  I started on Vipr which was both smart and stupid. Smart because it is the easiest of the three...stupid because I had to end on the battling ropes.

Vipr- We did 3 different moves:lateral tilt with side to side movement, spider man-where you are pushing the vipr with one hand while the other is on the ground (which is covered in goose poop) and almost crawling across the field(repeat with both arms) and lastly we did a lateral tilt with front to back movement.

Here are some examples

Then came TRX. I was a little more hesitant about TRX than ViPR because my arms are nowhere near as strong as my legs and TRX is all about using your body weight...which I still have too much of.

We did 3 moves on the TRX: balance lunge w/hop, chest press and squat jumps. By the time we were halfway through this workout I was struggling to catch my breath, and it was only 8 minutes in. Honestly I wanted to quit as soon as I heard that. But thankfully I had one of the teachers there pushing me along.

After TRX we had to run to Battling Ropes. I couldn't run, but I think I faked it pretty well.

Battling ropes were as scary and challenging as I thought they would be. They are SO heavy. Okay not SO heavy but they were pretty freakin heavy.. On the ropes we had 4 different moves to complete: The wave, battling rope slams, jumping jacks (yes while holding these damn things) and pulling the rope from side to side.

Just a few examples of how tough this workout really was

I had to take a few mini breaks in between sets, I was trying to catch my breath and stay focused. It was a total body workout and I felt myself getting tired quicker than expected. This class is a true test of your physical abilites and I cannot wait to see how I do this week.
Longer intervals and different moves. Eek!

Battling ropes I am coming for you!!

What I'm loving Wednesday!

It's that time again, the time for me to reflect on something I am *loving* and this week the winner is:::

Coconut Water! Not only is it delcious and refreshing it so SO good for you!

Here is some info on coconut water:

1 Serving has more potassium than a banana
It has 5 essential electrolytes
ZERO fat, cholesterol and added sugar (yay!)
rehydrates your body FASTER than water(perfect during/post workout)
it has been used as an intravenous and saved lives
has lower acid than any sports drink
helps cure hangovers!

I find that plain coconut water isn't the yummiest option so I have been experimenting with different brands and different flavors. The options range from chocolate to acai & pomegranate (as pictured above)

With so many positive things to offer I suggest going out RIGHT THIS SECOND and picking up a bottle. If you don't like it just shimmy it my way!

Dietary Changes

So I know I said when I started this blog I was a vegetarian...

 That lasted 2 months

Saturday mid-morning after a grueling 2 hour workout my body was craving something...It took me awhile before I could figure out what I really wanted. Then it hit me:

Fried Chicken

WTF!? Why was I craving such an unhealthy and odd meal? I haven't eaten chicken or any other meat in 2.5 months. I haven't had fried chicken in about 6 months so what gives?

Well I gave in to my craving. I figured my body was lacking the protein it has been needing, obviously I wasn't watching my protein intake on my veggie diet as much as I thought.

So I am back. I am not going to have meat everyday as I would like to incorporate more beans as protein into my meals but I will be more of a FLEXITARIAN then  VEGETARIAN. My fiance was right when he said " you don't need to label yourself, eat what you want when your hungry!"

He's so smart!

But this means I will be sharing both Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian recipes/food finds! YAY!

Power X

Tomorrow at 6:45 I will be starting a 4 week 30 minute class called Power X and I couldn't be more terrified.

as my favorite fitness instructor put it " This class will be a test of your true athletic ability. It will prepare you for marriage, childbirth, debt, divorce and anything else life may throw at you."

I already regret this decision.

All I know about this class is its a combination of TRX,Battling Ropes and VIPR.

Here are some photos for those who may not know what any of those mean::

This is a VIPR. Basically it's a weighted rigatoni.

These are battling ropes. And the thing I am most afraid of

and last but certainly not least TRX.

Tune in Thursday for a post POWER X update.
wish me luck!

What I'm loving Wednesday!

Crap, I really haven't blogged in an entire week!? Shame shame shame on me.. I am truly apologetic life's been hectic, I started a "new job" 2 weeks ago and I am still trying to get a hang of the workload. I vow to blog at least 3x a week from this moment forward. And since I suck and didn't post FITNESS FRIDAY last friday I will hit you with 2 workouts this week.

I know I shouldn't have -__-

I discovered this little gem last Friday on my "15 minute run out and grab something to get me through the rest of the day" break.

Dark Chocolate AND Sea Salt!? OH.MY.GOD Why didn't I think of this marriage?? Now this wasn't the bar that I had purchased that day(this one I just bought for today, don't judge), Friday I bought a Chocolove and literally fell in love. The bitterness of the dark chocolate, and the salty flavor from the sea salt was a combination I couldn't resist.

On Saturday I went to my beloved Trader Joe's to do some shopping...shit I should have done a food haul!...Oh well next time... Anyways I was looking for another dark chocolate+sea salt bar, but they only had one that also had caramel. Of course I bought it. It was insanely delicious.

Fast Forward to today, I was strolling through Borders buying the 4th installment of Harry Potter and a Vegetarian cookbook(for 3$!) when I passed the chocolate. I was going to restrain myself BUT I said if they have dark+sea i'll do it... and they did. This time I bought when I nom on it in a bit I will have to compare it to my Chocolove experience.

All in all I am OBSESSED with Dark Chocolate & Sea Salt right now.

What I'm loving Wednesday!

Every once in awhile we hear a song that just makes us feel good... The words just speak to us. That's how I feel about this song below::

Who Says
By Selena Gomez

I wouldn't wanna be anybody else.
You made me insecure,
Told me I wasn't good enough.
But who are you to judge
When you're a diamond in the rough.
I'm sure you got some things
You'd like to change about yourself.
But when it comes to me,
I wouldn't wanna be anybody else.

Na na na na na na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na
I'm no beauty queen.
I'm just beautiful me

Na na na na na na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na

You've got every right
To a beautiful life.
Come on!

Who says?
Who says you're not perfect?
Who says you're not worth it?
Who says you're the only one that's heard it?
Trust me,
That's the price of beauty.
Who says you're not pretty?
Who says you're not beautiful?
Who says?

It's such a funny thing
How nothing's funny when it's you.
You tell me whatcha mean,
But they keep whiting out the truth.
It's like a work of art
That never gets to see the light.
Keep you beneath the stars,
Won't let you touch the sky.

Na na na na na na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na

I'm no beauty queen.
I'm just beautiful me.

Who says?

Who says you're not star potential?
Who says you're not presidential?
Who says you can't be in movies?
Listen to me, listen to me.
Who says you don't pass the test?
Who says you can't be the best?
Who said?
Who said?
Would you tell me who said that?
Who said?

Who says?
Who says you're not perfect?
Who says you're not worth it?
Who says you're the only one that's heard it?
Trust me,
That's the price of beauty.
Who says you're not pretty?
Who says you're not beautiful?
Who says?

Who says?
Who says you're not perfect?
Who says you're not worth it?
Who says you're the only one that's heard it?
Trust me,
That's the price of beauty.
Who says you're not pretty?
Who says your not beautiful?
Who says?

...Now I know Selena Gomez is considered a "teeny-bopper" but she is also a great role model for everyone of every age. The lyrics in this song are uplifting and a message we all should listen to. Thumbs up Gomez.

Maybe this will "Spark" your interest....

There are so many diet books and weight loss programs out there it's insane. I feel like Weight Watchers/Jenny Craig/Diet Centers are easier to find than a Starbucks sometimes! (Which btw.. I am NOT okay with since I am kind of a die-hard Starbucks addict) You could always stroll to your local book store and buy a weight loss book, i.e South Beach Diet/Atkins Diet.. or if you're super savvy you could download the hottest new program/book on your iPhone or iPad.

Basically what I am saying is there are lots of options out there, and the ones I have mentioned--all cost money.

Fun Facts:
1. I am cheap
2. I am broke ( most of the time)

So joining a weight loss club like WW or hang with Jenny Craig & all her celeb friends just isn't an option for me.  That is what inspired me to type " free weight loss programs" into Google back in '09.

I was amazed at all of the free websites that were out there in cyber land for cheap/broke fatties like myself! SCORE! The first one that caught my eye was something called SparkPeople.

The best way to summarize is facebook for weight loss or a healthier lifestyle. They offer the following tools :Nutrition Tracker--which you can track what you have eaten on a daily basis OR they can create a nutrition plan for you based on your height/weight/BMI *ALSO* they give you food shopping lists and the recipe for each meal(remember this is FREE), Weight Tracker--You have your starting weight, current weight and goal weight--this portion also encourages you to track your inches because as most people know inches are just as important as pounds!  Fitness Tracker- Similar to the Nutrition tracker you can have SparkPeople create a workout plan FOR YOU based on how many calories you want to burn or pounds you want to loose per week (no more than 2lbs a week because they encourage healthy, long term weightloss) or you can do as I do and track your work outs on your own and calories burned with a handy, dandy heart rate monitor--I'll blog about this later.

In addition to those tools there is an entire community of people on there just like you! You set up a profile (much like facebook) and on there you can put pictures...weight loss/fitness goals/ join teams/leave comments, etc. Everyone on the website is motivating. Some people are just starting on their journeys and some have reached their goals, every page, every story is motivating and inspiring. I have spent many days just clicking through peoples stories or pictures, and telling myself I can be one of them. Someone will come across my page and I will motivate them---and it pushed me to be that much more active on the site.

There are free workout videos and healthy recipes added by both professionals and other memebers on the website. Basically there are no excuses. -It's all free-

OH! I haven't mentioned the best part! SparkPoints. Remember back in fifth grade the teacher had a poster board with everyone's names on it and some people had gold stars and some didn't? Gold stars were meant to encourage you to do better on whatever the task may be...That is spark points.

Everytime you log on,blog, track your food/fitness, join a team, etc etc You receive a specific number of SparkPoints. With spark points comes trophies, or you can send your friend a "goody" which is just a little picture but I'll tell you it makes you feel really great when someone you only know online sends you a "goody" with words like "congrats on your 20lb weight loss you're such an inspiration to me!"

I cannot say enough great things about SparkPeople I wish everyone would give it a try, or maybe just check the site out. You owe it to yourself.

AND if you do join...friend me :: allnewcarlyn --we can motivate each other :)

"You won't fail if you're not perfect, you'll fail if you're not committed to improving yourself slightly each day."

Channel your inner Chuck Norris

This is Killa. Everyone say HI KILLA!  She is my kickpad/weight loss buddy and boy does she "kill" my muscles! When using a kickpad a partner is required(unless you have a punching bag at home or in your gym) but I've found this to be a great workout to do with a spouse or family member because you can take out all the aggression you may have (caused by them or other things)and no one gets hurt!  I purchased my kickpad right here : It took over 3 months due to backorder but was well worth the wait!

There are so many reasons you should all go out and buy one RIGHT NOW! It is a great way to learn self defense, it's an intense workout tool for both in the gym and at home, it improves balance and stability while increasing core muscles. So many options, so little time! Here are a few ways to get your kick-on:

These links below are just a series of Kickboxing workouts that you can do on your own and without a pad:

This is by far my favorite type of workout! It is pretty intense but also fun. Whether I am at home working out with Killa or taking a Kickboxing class at Fitness Incentive this workout never gets old and never gets easier. Do yourself a favor a give it a try!

FIT Friday!

Okay I totally just realized I forgot to post a FIT Friday, it was a crazy crazy work day that when I finally got home me and the fi went out for some hardcore drinks....Not an excuse but it's the truth! So I will post TWO blogposts today to make up for my drunken shortcoming.

Today's FIT Friday post is all about YOGA! I have only tried yoga once, about 5 years ago with my mom. She took me to Bikram Yoga (yanno the one that is in a heatbox of a room and lasts about an hour & half too long?) I have ADD and if I am not into something right away I just can't bring myself to do it. Whether it is workout related, chores, conversations, etc. I cannot do it! (Note to self: change this about self)

There are so many benefits to doing Yoga that it would be silly not to try it again. So today I will be doing this video and hope that you will join me!
My goals for yoga are: enjoy it
2.improve flexibility
3.learn to meditate/find peacefulness in my world

I am such a highstrung, stressful human being. I worry all the time about everything not only is it unhealthy but it is exhausting. If doing some yoga once in awhile can help me I am all for giving it another shot!

What I'm loving Wednesdays!

This is kind of similar to FIT Friday but it will be totally random. I may be loving a certain nailpolish color this week and next week it may be a hairstyle or a song or a scent or a recipe...etc etc you get the point. This week it's a website that was introduced to me this past weekend by my best friend who also happens to be my cousin, fellow veggie and someone who also shares my love of creating a new dish.

Now I know a few of my posts have been about food/recipes and this blog isn't only about that but I can't help it I LOVE FOOD...more importantly I LOVE GOOD FOOD! Good food meaning it tastes yummy and is healthy #WINNING! This site is tons of pictures of all different types of food, and if you click the picture it takes you to the accompanying website with the recipe. How awesome is that! I already found a bunch of recipes I am dying to make, first one will have to be the "Cheese, tomato & basil tart"

Get your booties over to that site and enjoy some "food porn"

Black Bean-Corn burgers with Cilantro Lime Dressing!

One of my FAVORITE things to do is cook, unfortunately I don't get to do it as often i'd like but when I can I take full advantage.  Yesterday I came up with a black bean and corn burger and topped it with Paula Dean's recipe for cilantro lime mayo--so delicious!

Ingredients for Black Bean & Corn Burgers

One can of black beans(I used Goya because it was what I had)
1/3 cup of corn kernels
3 garlic cloves
1/2 onion
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1 egg

Makes FOUR big patties

Preheat oven to 350
Rinse and drain black beans and place in a medium size bowl
Mash beans with a fork to desired consistancy
Chop garlic and onion and add to black beans
Add corn and mix well
Add the breadcrumbs and egg,  using your hands mix everything together into a big bean ball
Seperate into 4 patties or two huge ones
Bake for 20 minutes, ten on each side * I like to broil on low at the very end for desired crunch

Paula Dean's Cilantro Lime "Mayo"

1/2 cup of chobani non-fat plain greek yogurt
1/4 fresh chopped cilantro
Zest half a lime then use the juice of that half

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl, mix well with a spoon and enjoy!

The finished project looks like this :
